What we work on in coaching

Every coaching relationship is tailored, but common focus areas include:

  • Stepping into a new leadership role or expanding responsibilities.
  • Navigating change, conflict, and difficult conversations with staff, faculty, or boards.
  • Strengthening communication, delegation, and collaboration skills.
  • Clarifying priorities and boundaries to prevent burnout and support sustainable practice.
  • Exploring decisions about career direction, vocation, or next steps in your work.

If you are holding a lot for your organization and rarely have space to think about your own leadership, coaching gives you a confidential space focused on you.

How coaching with Fosgail works

Coaching is a structured but flexible partnership, grounded in listening and the belief that you are the expert on your own context.

  1. Schedule a free chemistry session
Your first step is a 45-minute online conversation to get to know one another, explore what you are hoping to work on, and ask questions about coaching. There is no obligation to continue if it does not feel like a good fit.
  2. Clarify focus and goals
If we decide to work together, we spend time identifying what matters most to you right now—specific challenges, patterns you want to shift, or changes you hope to make.
  3. Meet regularly for coaching sessions
Coaching sessions are usually one hour and scheduled at a pace that supports your capacity, often every two to four weeks over a period of several months. In each session, we reflect on what is happening in your work, explore options, and co-create next steps.
  4. Reflect and decide what’s next
Near the end of an engagement, we look back at what has changed, what you have learned about yourself and your leadership, and whether you want to continue, pause, or shift focus.

You can also integrate coaching with other Fosgail offerings, such as integrated planning or leadership development programs, when that supports your goals

Our approach to coaching

Fosgail coaching is shaped by Attendant Leadership and the Fosgail Mindset, which emphasize attention to relationships, context, and sustainable ways of working. Rather than offering generic leadership advice, we pay close attention to how your values, identity, and environment interact, and we work with you to find approaches that fit your reality.

A metaphor we use for the coaching journey is walking a labyrinth. This ancient spiritual practice involves walking along a circular path that orbits a center, alternating moving closer and further away from that center before arriving, then returning by the same path to the place where you started. Our coaching practice follows a similar rhythmic pattern: circle high above a situation to take in its size, shape, and scale, then move in closer to examine the details and discover meaning, and finally more back out again to reflect on this new learning and insight to see how it fits or changes what is known about the whole.

Is executive coaching with Fosgail a good fit?

Coaching with Fosgail may be a good fit if:

  • You are a manager, director, dean, or emerging leader in a library or educational setting.
  • You want a confidential space to think out loud, experiment with new perspectives, and receive thoughtful questions—not directives.
  • You are ready to reflect on your patterns and try small, realistic changes between sessions.

Coaching may not be a fit if you are looking for quick fixes, formal therapy, or someone to tell you exactly what to do in every situation; in those cases, we can help you think about other resources

Next steps

Myka was an empathetic and organized coach who offered clarity and specific developmental suggestions for each situation we addressed. Her strengths included thoughtfulness, and bringing a structure to our conversations, yet being willing to spend time on topics I brought up. She used practical coaching tools and both gave and asked for honest, valuable feedback. I found our sessions very helpful and productive.
