Invitation to FLIP and Reflect
At Fosgail, our mission and core values influence how we see the world and how we approach our coaching and consulting work. Because we wish to participate in developing a more compassionate and well-informed human society, we believe in an intentional adoption of mindset, learning, integration, problem-solving, and reflection. This is our trademark approach that we bring to working with our clients. It’s called FLIP-R.
F is for Fosgail Mindset. This is the awareness, attitudes, and practices we’ve identified as contributing to workplace well-being. Building on the principle of fosgail, or openness, adopting this mindset is essential to mentally prepare for positive change and growth.
- Awareness consists of personality traits, intersectionality (a framework for understanding the interplay of multiple socially constructed identities), bias, trauma, conflict, relationship (with self and others), and environment.
- Attitudes include curiosity, appreciation, hospitality, intentionality, creativity, and courage.
- Practices involve grounding, listening to understand, curating wisdom, discernment, connection, navigating by a horizon, and forgiveness.
L is for Learn. There is always something to learn, whether it be through self-discovery in coaching or through exploration in a consulting project.
I is for Integrate. Learning and acquiring knowledge isn’t enough to evoke transformation by itself. New knowledge must be integrated with the knowledge and beliefs we were holding before we learned it. Once we have learned something new, we have to fit it into what we know of the world; and what we know of the world has to change to make space for what we’ve learned.
P is for Problem-Solve. Moving into problem solving too quickly increases the chances of missing underlying issues that are contributing to the problem and likely to cause future problems. This is why we focus more attention on mindset, learning, and integrating new knowledge before turning attention to problem solving.
R is for Reflect. Like a concave lens, reflecting through a fosgail mindset, learning, integrating new knowledge, and problem-solving reveals new understanding, new perspectives, and new lines of thought. It invites deeper exploration of a fosgail mindset, more opportunities to learn, integrating knowledge anew, and trying different problem solving approaches.
