Theological librarianship is changing rapidly and leadership development in our field hasn’t always kept pace. Not everyone has the network or resources to piece together their own path. That’s exactly why the Leadership Development for Theological Librarians program exists: to offer something intentional, supportive, and accessible to theological librarians at early and mid-career stage from any sized institution.
For a fourth year, Fosgail is partnering with the John Bulow Campbell Library at Columbia Theological Seminary to offer this cohort-based program, made possible by a generous grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.
What This Program Is
Leadership Development for Theological Librarians is more than a workshop series. It combines cohort learning, one-on-one coaching, and structured self-reflection to help participants develop an authentic, grounded leadership identity. The program is built around three core goals:
- Increasing knowledge of foundational leadership practices
- Building a lasting professional network and cohort community
- Cultivating deep self-awareness as the foundation of good leadership
Participants work with two psychometric tools—CliftonStrengths and the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI)—to understand their strengths, their approach to conflict, and how they show up for others. The culminating in-person retreat brings the full cohort together for a rich, immersive experience.
Leadership isn’t just for directors or administrators. Anyone, regardless of their role, can be a leader and an advocate.

Is This Program For You?
Priority will be given to theology and religious studies librarians who are in a position they have held for three years or less. The cohort is ideal for early and mid-career librarians either acclimating to a new leadership position or preparing to move into a higher-level position. Six participants will be selected for the 2026-27 cohort.
What to Expect
The program runs August 2026 through May 2027 and includes:
- 1-2 hours per month for workshops and coaching, both as a cohort and individually (August through March)
- A three-day in-person retreat at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA (April 2027)
- Independent study and reflection between sessions, and development of a personal leadership development plan
The entirety of program costs is covered by the grant. All travel, lodging, and meal expenses for the in-person retreat will be covered or reimbursed. All necessary supplies and materials will be provided.
What Participants Have Said
This [leadership development] program allowed me to listen and learn from colleagues who are also committed to grow as leaders in our profession. It is the right place to pause, reflect and grow.
Bilingual Reference & Acquisitions Librarian, Pitts Theology Library, Emory University
Participating in the Leadership Development cohort has profoundly shaped my understanding of authentic leadership. It helped me align my values and abilities with leadership practices and provided a reflective space to identify and prioritize areas for my personal growth.
Collection Metadata Integrity & Management Librarian, University of Notre Dame
I have been challenged and encouraged as a member of the [leadership development] cohort. Completing various ’tests’ and reading about leadership has made me aware of my strengths and areas I need to work on in order to be a better leader. Supportive leaders and colleagues in similar situations made this an unforgettable and life changing experience.
